It's also harder to get into. The minimum initial purchase is $10,000, and
I think that until recently there was a $25,000/year purchase limit. The
STAR fund, in contrast, has only a $1,000 minimum purchase and no maximum.

And the two funds are not far apart in performance. If you had invested
$10,000 in Wellington ten years ago, you'd have $25,624 today; if you had
chosen the STAR fund, you'd have $24,279.

I'm not gonna knock Wellington. But you can't buy it if you're opening an
IRA, because the IRA maximum is below the Wellington minimum. In which case
I think STAR is a fine alternative.

I disagree.
I think one is as good as the other. STAR could be a one fund solution for
an investor, Wellington would need a little more diversification.

I normally don't go for index funds, but their Mid Cap Growth Index (VMGIX)
fund looks good to me.

That's a new fund that has only a 6 month record. For a longer track record,
look at the Vanguard Midcap Index (VIMSX) (almost 9 years).

It's an index fund.

Good point. Some of the other posts are bringing up other types of
funds in the comparison to STAR. The star fund is not only a
"balanced fund" it is a fund of funds. The charts offered in the
posts of the other funds mentioned are impressive in the short run.
But the Star just keeps on shinning long term. Like I said it has
been very good to me.

Have a good Easter gang
